Introduction

This project supports the organization of a summer training school for 1 week to be held in Moneasa (Arad) on behalf of about 15 computer science advanced students, Ph.D. students and junior faculty of the A. Vlaicu University, Romania. This university is a very dynamic and young one located in Transylvania, Romania. The project represents a higher education institutions cooperation to enrich the quality of training at the A. Vlaicu University , Romania based on Canadian expertise.  Both Canadian lectures, Professors, E. Roventa and D. Uritescu, are well recognized internationally in their fields of interest and speak fluently Romanian. Students will acquire professional and linguistic skills in an intercultural context. The title of the training school, which will be held in English, will be “Development of Hybrid Intelligent Systems” and will have computer science and linguistic components.  The tentative schedule for Prof. Uritescu is below:

1)General principles of linguistics applicable to language teaching

2)Latest notions of language learning for specific purposes (field of computer science)

3)Concepts of language in society and bilingualism

4)English as a global language

5)Practice..

Project Proposal

The training school will last 1 week, 8 hours per day.

From 8 am to 12 pm Professor Roventa will lecture in the field of Artificial Intelligence, concentrating on the state of the art area of Hybrid Intelligent Systems. The tentative schedule will be as follows:

1)      Knowledge Representation

2)      Uncertainty Management in Knowledge-Based Systems

3)      Fuzzy Expert Systems

4)      Neural Nets

5)      Genetic Algorithms

6)      Hybrid Intelligent Systems

7)      Applications

The laboratory component will consist of the design and implementation in Visual Prolog of various applications, will use the MATLAB environment and will be designed to foster the students’ individual thinking concerning this area of Artificial Intelligence. For this reason we need a powerful laptop to be able to handle the various computing environments.

From 2 pm to 6 pm Professor D. Uritescu, member of the French Department of York University, will lecture regarding some contemporary developments in the field of English as an International Language, following the tentative schedule below:

1)      General principles of linguistics applicable to language teaching

2)      Latest notions of language learning for specific purposes (field of computer science)

3)      Concepts of language in society and bilingualism

4)      English as a global language

5)      Practice.

Some of the school’s students intend to continue their Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at York University. Therefore it is very important to improve their English linguistic skills. The professors will administer the Glendon English Language Placement test, as a means of assessing Arad students’ readiness to participate successfully in disciplinary program at York. Glendon also has a unique training program, a Certificate of Teaching English as an International Language (Cert D-TEILB, Coordinator Professor In Martin), which could be of interest to Arad - York program in the future. Both professors have received the title of honorary professors of the A. Vlaicu University.

Goals and Purpose

The training school will develop and reinforce the linguistic skills of the participants.
